Why Acidic Condensate Damages HVAC Components

The first victim is usually the zinc coating on galvanized steel. Acid dissolves the protective layer, then attacks the exposed steel. Once a pinhole forms, condensate leaks through the pan. Copper drain lines and aluminum fins can also show pitting when wet with low-pH water for long periods.

The damage is not limited to the HVAC unit. Acidic water that reaches a concrete floor drain can erode mortar, and frequent discharge into a septic system can disrupt biological treatment. Choosing the Right Drain Pan Material

Not every condensate pan needs to be stainless steel. The right material depends on how often the system operates, whether condensate is treated, and local code requirements. The table below summarizes the options.
