Product Overview
A secondary, or auxiliary, drain pan exists specifically for the failure case: it does nothing under normal operation and only matters when the primary drain pan or line has already gone wrong, whether from a clog, a crack, or an overflow from higher-than-expected condensate volume. Because it is a safety component rather than a normal-operation part, sizing and placement need to account for worst-case water volume, not typical daily condensate output.
When we build secondary drain pans, we size the pan to extend beyond the footprint of the equipment or primary pan above it, since overflow does not always fall in a single predictable spot, and we build in adequate depth and edge height to hold a meaningful volume of water before it could overflow the secondary pan itself. Where the application calls for active water detection rather than passive containment alone, we can include a cutout or mounting bracket for a float switch that shuts down the equipment or triggers an alarm if water is detected in the secondary pan, based on the customer's specification.
Material selection matters more for secondary pans than it might first appear, since this pan may sit untouched for long periods and needs to perform reliably the first time it is actually needed, which is not a moment to discover the pan has quietly corroded through. We generally recommend a durable material and finish for secondary pans even when the primary pan uses a lighter-duty specification, since the cost difference is small relative to the water damage a failed secondary pan could allow.
We supply secondary drain pans both as standalone parts sized to a customer's equipment footprint and as part of a packaged air handling unit build for OEM customers, and we can advise on sizing relative to local code requirements when a customer shares the applicable jurisdiction and equipment capacity.

Application
Secondary drain pans are installed beneath air handlers, evaporator coils and similar equipment located above ceilings, in attics, closets, or other spaces where an undetected water leak could cause structural or interior damage. They serve as required or recommended overflow protection independent of, and in addition to, the primary drain pan and line.
Specification should include the footprint of the equipment above the pan, any local code requirements for overflow protection sizing, and whether the installation requires an integrated float switch for active shutoff or alarm, or passive containment alone. Contractors should confirm the pan extends far enough beyond the equipment footprint to catch overflow reliably, not just directly beneath the primary drain connection.
